That’s Right Folks…One of the fastharry.com crew members just bought back his original 1976 Kawasaki KZ-900 street/dragbike after 30 years in storage and it is going to be our next project now that the 55 Chevy is done. This bike is a 10,000 mile original KZ 900 and was last ridden in 1982. If you look closely you will see a number of chassis changes that transformed the bike into a formidable street/drag racer. The frame is raked 8 degrees and has 2 inch shorter fork tubes in front. The back is a D and K swing arm with needle bearings and a 6 inch aluminum road racing rim that rides in the outermost position. The rear tire is also pinned to prevent spinning on the rim. The frame was a legal DRAGBIKE! Pro Stock frame and has been fully braced, triangulated and strengthened and the only thing needed to run PRO Stock at that time would have been to replace the rear shocks with struts and lower the front forks further. It also features an MRE Enterprises air shifter with holding tank under the seat. The front forks feature Timken roller bearings in the stem and air caps. This 76 kawi was designed to be a 150 mph drag/street bike with no wobble (as KZ’s and Z1’s were noted for) or stability problems. The bike with an American Turbo Pak turbo system ran a 10.5 (on that street tire) at 146 mph in 1977 at Island Dragway in NJ.
The motor that is currently in the bike is the original casing with a welded crank, reworked transmission and had a 1274 cc Russ Collins Big Block piston kit with a Murray Engineering X Pipe (really cool sound!). We are not sure what size we are going to make it yet…but it will be fast and it will be street-able like it was originally.
The bike as a whole is approx 7 inches longer and has a clearance of only 5 inches between the street and bottom tube. That is without a rider.
This bike was modified for street/drag racing in 1977 and ran like a dream. We are currently looking for a donor bike to replace any old parts and top end for the motor so if you know anything, please write.
Fuckin awesome
thanks!…..It’s a work in progress. but like every bike build, time we have…all it takes is money…. but we are getting there….
Yeah, but if it’s finished, it’s a killer!!!
